Jugs and Mugs and Demitasse

Project type

Ceramics

Date

2022-2023

When I was first learning my trade in ceramics, I decided to make some mugs to practice techniques on. I've refined the design many times since then, and it has taught me how to design, progress, build and refine a project from start to finish. Typically, I didn't want just another mug, so I opted for an oval shape. I stuck to hand building and using stoneware so the pieces are hardy for everyday use. I learned to vitrify my wares so they are fit to hold liquids and are food grade safe. I like colour and opted for a multitude of shades that are colourful, bright and eye catching. I also have a thing about stripes, so it seemed obvious to incorporate them into my design. Yet, it's just a mug, right? I've since adapted the designs to make demitasse for espressos and for the little people in our lives who enjoy wee hot drinks. I carried the stripes through to these too. Everything tiny is cute, but the demitasse just make me smile each time I see them. Jugs seemed an obvious addition to the family, and for these I drew on my love of Victorian circus tents. I may one day stripe a jug and combine the whole thing into one big Freakshow!
